Instructor: Denise Smalt has over 18 years training/teaching experience, and more than 25 years as an active dog enthusiast which includes Obedience, Tracking, Protection, and Agility, attending many seminars and training classes. Included in her experience is 3 years as a Veterinarian’s assistant and over 15 years of raising German Shepherds with her husband Peter Smalt, and their 2 children. Training Method: We use a positive reinforcement method for training. (We highly discourage choke chains, instead we have many other safer correctional/control collars that we suggest.) The focus is on rewarding correct behavior with something the dog sees as pleasing, such as treats and praise to teach a new behavior. Corrections are only used when trying to change a bad behavior. This creates a “happy dog” who loves obedience ! Classes: Are held evenings, year round in Bath & Horseheads. Classes are held once a week for 6 weeks. Week 1 runs 11/2 –2 hrs. and weeks 2-6 run 45 min. to 1 hr.. Class times may vary, but are usually around 6:00, 7:00 and sometime 8:00 - scheduled as needed. ( Special AM Class sometimes available upon request in HH) Class size: Average size is 10–15 handlers/dogs Pet Info: Minimum age is 10 weeks up to 10+ years old, for Beginner Class. 10 – 18 weeks for Puppy Class. 9 months for CGC. 4 months + for Agility. It’s never too early or too late to train your dog ! We encourage people to start as early as they can ! All dogs must be up to date on their yearly vaccines. Beginner, First Class: “No dogs” the first night, it is a lecture format (including demos and a Q & A time) Plan on staying 11/2 – 2 hrs. Bring: shot records & payment. “Hands On” training starts in week 2. Cost: Beginner class $125 cash * money order or certified check to Pete or Denise Smalt. Discounts for repeat classes, see class list. No price breaks for missing classes– make ups available in future classes.
